Tacos, records and Mexican shop
The first properly sunny day off that both Bobby and I had off together this year, we ventured to one of our lesser explored areas of Bristol for the afternoon, Upper Maudlin Street.

I’d spotted this new-ish taco spot several months ago and it’d sat on my ‘need to try’ list for too long. Alta Loma is a Mexican street food restaurant with a small shop selection of hot sauces, jarred Jalapeño etc and a vinyl store in its basement.

Walk-ins only, this food joint is serving up the tastiest tacos I’ve ever had in Bristol. A high-energy atmosphere and a rotating door of customers swinging by for lunch, we chose the street seating to soak in the sunshine.
The turnover was quick that you don’t have to wait long for a table – although I can’t attest for Friday evening which is their only late night opening, I can imagine it being very popular.

We have a tendency to over order when there’s an exciting menu before us, but we managed to resist the urge this time and ended up with the perfect amount. Here’s what we had:
Queso birria tacos
Melt in your mouth beef, cooked in smokey Mexican chillies and stuffed in a fried tortilla with mozzarella cheese, coriander & red onion …the best part – a pot of consommé for dunking.

Baja fish tacos
A classic taco choice. Battered cod on a bed of pico de gallo, topped with jalapeño salsa. Fresh and zingy with the moreish crunch of the fried cod.

Fries with Mexican oregano
Simple seasoning, a nice side for the chip lover. Next time, we’d order more tacos next time instead!

With a reasonably priced menu, fun atmosphere and a very tasty meal, we will most definitely be returning to work our way through the rest of the menu!
